When you think of a weekend escape in Paris, iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the scenic Seine Banks, or the charming streets of Le Marais are usually the first to come to mind. But what do you do if you have less than 48 hours to spend in this amazing city?
Arriving in Style at Gare de Lyon
Our trip begins the moment we arrive at Gare de Lyon, a bustling transportation hub conveniently located near many Parisian attractions and renowned for its grand architecture and rich history. The station’s Belle Époque façade, with its striking clock tower, sets the tone for the grandeur that awaits in this fantastic city. Traveling by train to Paris offers a significant advantage—no lengthy airport shuttles to contend with, making it easy to settle in and start your adventure right away.
If your stay in the city is less than 24 hours, you can conveniently store your bags near Gare de Lyon, ensuring you’re free to roam the city while your belongings are safely stowed away during your exploration.
Where to Stay
For a short trip, we recommend choosing a hotel close to your main transportation hub, and the area around Gare de Lyon offers no shortage of luxury hotels. We love Hôtel Jules & Jim, a boutique gem that seamlessly blends contemporary comfort with Parisian charm. The hotel’s chic decor, attentive service, and central location make it an ideal base for your luxury adventure. Another excellent choice is the Marriott Paris Rive Gauche Hotel & Conference Center, which features a top-notch spa and gourmet dining options.
What to See
Promenade Plantée
Just a short walk from Gare de Lyon, this elevated park – the first of its kind in the world – stretches for 5km (or roughly 3 miles), built on a former railway line. It’s a peaceful, very unique green space with gardens and great views of Paris, perfect for a morning stroll. We simply loved it!
Le Viaduc des Arts
Located under the Promenade Plantée, this series of renovated arches houses art galleries, boutiques, and workshops featuring French craftsmanship. It’s a great stop for unique shopping and art.
Place de la Bastille and Opéra Bastille
About a 15-minute walk, the historic Place de la Bastille is where the famous Bastille prison once stood, symbolizing the French Revolution. You can explore the area, see the July Column (Colonne de Juillet), and soak in the revolutionary history. While it may not be the most picturesque Parisian square, its historical significance makes it a must-visit destination.
If you enjoy modern architecture and are staying overnight, and have time for a performance, check out the Opéra Bastille near Place de la Bastille. While it may not be as grand as the Palais Garnier, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Musée des Arts Forains
A short taxi or metro ride away, this fascinating museum showcases vintage carnival rides and fairground attractions. It’s whimsical, colorful, and a hidden gem for those who enjoy quirky museums. For tickets and admission times check out the museum website.
Jardin des Plantes
We love botanical gardens, and the Jardin des Plantes are just 20-minute walk or quick metro ride away. It’s a beautiful space, complete with a zoo, greenhouses, and also home the Natural History Museum. It’s a tranquil spot to relax and enjoy nature in the heart of Paris and a must-visit destination for plant lovers in Paris.
Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Sainte-Chapelle
Cross over to the small islands on the Seine, home to the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral and Sainte-Chapelle. While Notre-Dame remains closed, its reopening is scheduled for this December. In the meantime, you can still admire its architecture from the outside and visit the breathtaking Sainte-Chapelle. Enjoy the rich history, charming cafés, and scenic riverside views. Keep in mind, this area is often very, very crowded, so it’s best enjoyed early in the morning.
River Seine Cruise
Though a highly touristy experience, it is immensely worthwhile. If you have the time, consider taking one of the many Seine river cruises that conveniently depart from Île de la Cité, near Sainte-Chapelle. The riverbanks are lined with stunning buildings, and you’ll get to enjoy some of Paris’ most iconic landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, all while sitting comfortably and perhaps enjoying a delicious snack.
Le Marais District
A vibrant neighborhood known for its narrow streets, historic buildings, and trendy boutiques, cafés, and galleries. It’s about a 20-minute walk or short metro ride and is ideal for exploring history, fashion, and Parisian culture.
These attractions are all easily accessible from Gare de Lyon and provide a variety of experiences for a memorable one-day trip in Paris!
